Promoting Health, Education, and Welfare in Haiti.

AMHE Foundation Programs

The AMHE Foundation Justinien Hospital Program.

One of the stellar ongoing programs of the Foundation is the continuous support provided to Hospital Justinien in Cap-Haitien, the second largest city of Haiti. The city of Cap-Haitien is the hub of the northern area of the country and was historically the capital city of the Kingdom established by King Henry, the ruler that built the famous Citadel Laferrière, dubbed by many to be the eighth marvel of the world.

Hospital Justinien is a departmental hospital for the North Department and a University Referral Center for the area known as the Greater North of Haiti. Its Greater catchment area is home to just about three million inhabitants. So, the foundation had identified that the smooth functioning of that center is paramount to the lives of several million Haitians.

Dr Louis-Joseph Auguste MD, a Cap-Haitien native and surgical oncologist practicing in the New York area had spearheaded and organized the Justinien dedicated effort for many years. He correctly diagnosed that the problems at that most important health facility are enormous and certainly cannot be solved all at once. He has chosen to tackle them one by one and hopefully this will make a significant difference in the life and health of our fellow human beings of that region.

Dr Auguste wants to improve health care delivery at Justinien by tackling the electricity problem. Indeed, the supply of electricity is crucial to the delivery of medical care as we know it. Power outages occur at any time during surgery, cesarean section, or any procedure and when oil delivery to the country is halted for several weeks, as happened a couple of months ago, everything grinds to a halt. Therefore, we have embarked on an ambitious program to provide solar energy to the Justinien Hospital operating suite. Our consultant had calculated that the whole operating suite could be electrified at a cost of $100,000. Not able to come up with this sum of money, we have decided to do it step by step.

Second Annual Justinien Hospital Fundraiser
Saturday October 26, 2019, from 7:00 to 12:00 PM
Congregation B’nai Israel, Freeport, NY

Back on October 28, 2018, Dr Auguste organized in the New York area the First Annual Fundraiser on behalf of Justinien Hospital. The event was a success. We were able to realize a net profit of $25,000.00. Thanks to your generous contribution and participation, we were able to place a bid for a contract to electrify the first one of the three operating rooms, with solar panels. We are finalizing the discussions around that contract, and the signing will take place soon. Our Second Fundraiser this year will allow us to bring power to the second operating suite. Please everybody save the date and plan to be with us in person or in spirit.

Those who live in the New York area, bring your family and friends.

Saturday October 26, 2019, from 7:00 to 12:00 PM.
